How to get there
Take the R27 from Cape Town. You will see an Engen petrol station on your left, and a sign `Sunset Beach`. Turn left here. At the end of the road, you have to turn left or right. Turn either way and then look for a road to the beach. There are about 5 parking spots. Not much difference between them.
The wind fills in on the sea first at Sunset Beach. There are are three parking areas to choose from. Sunset offers perfect down-the-line wave riding, as long as you get some swell, and there are several peaks along the beach. It is always lighter on the inside and nuking on the outside. South Easterlies are cross offshore. Get here early to avoid the crowds.
Beach faces: West Best wind direction: SE and the occasional NW (which is cross-on). Worst wind direction: All others. Tide: It is best when the tide is fully out because the wind will be less gusty. There is a small but vicious shorebreak at high tide. What’s on the bottom?: Sand. Any hazards: Apart from various aquatic life from the top of the food chain and powerful waves when the swell is big, nothing else! Other water users: The odd kitesurfer and surfers.
Wind and Weather Conditions
Long wetsuits needed all year round - although people were seen in shorties some times. Air around 30°C in the summer, down to 15°C in the winter. The water is pretty cold, around 10-15°C in the summer and 13-17°C in the winter. The longer the Southeaster (prevailing summer wind) blows, the colder the surface water gets. Doesn't matter much in summer though. Recommended wind for kitesurfing is wind coming from SW . There is Trade wind at Sunset Beach, South Africa. Sunset is mostly a windsurf spot. In the normal Southeaster, the winds are pretty offshore and gusty due to the houses that have been built over the last 10 years. Mostly populated by windsurfers. In a SW, it can happen that the wind is a lot stronger than at Kitebeach. The wind here is generally 20% stronger compared to Big Bay. Happens that you are overpowered on a kite which didn't work in Kitebeach in a SW. NW doesn't work so well, better go to Kitebeach or Big Bay. Beware, sometimes it's gusty on the beach. Wind usually blows from SE on the spot. The best moments to come to Sunset Beach, South Africa are January, February, March, November and December .
Beach and Tide Conditions
Sunset Beach, South Africa is a Small waves and Medium waves spot. The launching/landing area is reported to be of Medium size. The beach is sandy, and usually wide enough to allow for a good launch. Shore break can get gnarly sometimes. Some kitesurfers launch from the most downwind parking spot in a SE to go for a long downwind trip to Kitebeach (about 3km). Waves nice, can be ridden down the line. Generally smaller than in Kite or Melkbos. In a SW, you have to cross them diagonally, can be a bit tricky. Wave sizes vary, from small to huge. The waves are not the biggest around but very powerful and it makes Sunset a prime wave riding spot.
Suitability/levels: When the swell is small Sunset is a good introduction to waves for the aspiring intermediate. Experts can take full advantage of the excellent down-the-line wave riding conditions. Wipeout factor: High, if you do not hold onto your kit on a big day. You will be in for a fairly long swim in. On small days it is reasonably safe.
Sud Africa+Cape Town=Sunset. E' il primo spot che si incontra arrivando a Cape Town. Ottimo per saltare e surfare. La spiaggia molto lunga e molti parcheggi (Otto Du Plessis). Kitesurf: Wind Direction:SE, S, SW, NW Best Months: December to April. Conditions: Generally, the wind is stronger at Sunset than at Bloubergstrand. If you get here and the place is completely blown out, you might be well advised to head to Big Bay or Dolphin Beach, where you could have a far more relaxed session. This spot can get very gusty on a SE close to the shore. It is best to start your downwinder from this point and head off to Dolphin Beach or Doodles Beach. Rigging Area: In the car park or on the beach. Sunset is the reef left of Long Beach. There are very often huge waves and the local big wave crew is tow-in surfing them. A boat and big balls are essential.

'Cape Doctor' è il nome del vento di sud est che inizia a soffiare con regolarità da fine ottobre ai primi di maggio, con il suo picco nei mesi di gennaio-febbraio. Questo vuol dire che se in Italia è inverno, in Sud Africa è estate piena.
Se avete molta robba da portare auguri per il portafolio. Vi può dire bene e non pagare nulla, ma vi può dire anche male. Vi consiglio di prendere la forma economica dei trasporti di grossi quantitativi di merce (l'unionconpanioned).

La sera sono moltissimi i locali dove divertirsi. Capo Town è una città tranquilla. Da non perdere assolutamente sono i tramonto sulla Table Mountain, la montagna piatta, la visita alla riserva e al Capo di Buona Speranza, le zone della coltivazione della vite presso Stellenbosh e Paarl e per noi windsurfisti le innumerevoli spiagge bianche battute dai venti e dalle onde dell'oceano. Da non perdere la visita al garde route la wine round, le riserve
Ci sono molti squali..., la maggior parte innoqui e si riconoscono dall'andatura lenta e dalla pinna grossa piramidale e schiena scura. Invece occhio agli squali bianchi.
Cape Town con quasi 5 milioni di abitanti, offre moltissime possibilità di alloggio in una vasta aria. Ottima posizione strategica è 'table view (Blowberg) sunset', con una sistemazione in una delle tante case in affitto o in una guest house. Questa seconda ipotesi è consigliabile se intendente permanere più di 15/20 giorni. I prezzi variano e si riesce a trovare anche alloggi a prezzi bassi ma salgono notevolmente sotto Natale. Per quanto riguarda il noleggio dell'auto sono numerose i 'rent a cars'..., ma sono molto cari. Se decidete di fermarvi per un lungo periodo, vi conviene acquistare un auto per poi rivenderla alla vostra partenza. Comunque se decidete di affidarVi ad un 'rent car' le tariffe sono di 2 tipi: una con km. free e assicurazione giornaliera e la seconda con tariffe molto economiche e assicurazione + un prezzo fisso a km. percorso. (pagamento carta di credito) Ma fate molta attenzione, le auto vengono rubate con estrema facilità e chi ci rimette siete proprio voi che dovrete pagare una penale in base al prezzo dell'auto. in città. In sud Africa la carne a tavola è d'obbligo che viene cucina in tutti i modi. Può capitare di mangiare anche zebra e antilopi cucinate sul barbeque. Il pesce è ottimo e si riescono a mangiare aragoste a poco prezzo.
Il Sud Africa è un luogo che è per la sua eccezionale bellezza e condizioni meteo ne fanno una perla del Windsurf/kitesurf e surf. Onde che variano dal metro ai 3/5 metri si possono trovare quasi tutti i giorni e il numero degli spot presenti in Sud Africa, offre una scelta di condizioni molto varia. L'acqua è fredda e in genere si esce con la muta intera. La guida è al contrario (sistema inglese), Il rand è la moneta ufficiale circa 295 lire. La Benzina costa molto poco.. circa 2,30 rand. E' buona usanza lasciare una mancia intorno al 10% del conto. Se immaginiamo di trovare zulù con maceti o altro, abbiamo sbagliato di grosso. Sono tutti alti, biondi e belli, specialmente le ragazze e la popolazione di colore è al 50%.
